The government has declared Monday 8 May. as an additional bank holiday to commemorate the King’s Coronation. This is the same process as the recent Jubilee and Queen’s funeral extra bank holidays.
Does the employer have to give staff a paid day off? Well it all depends on the contract ….. as always. If the contract states staff are entitled to all bank holidays, then the answer is yes. Should the contract detail the 8 ‘normal’ bank holidays the employer does not have to pay for the extra bank holiday. Subject to the normal rules the employee can of course take it as a paid holiday by way of their normal entitlement. Even if staff are entitled to all bank holidays, they may be required to work on that day if so they are entitled to a day off in lieu.
